 Introduction

Bridge House run by The Salvation Army, provides a sobering facility for patients under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The facility has the capacity to look after 10 male and 4 female patients and is available 24 hours, seven days per week. The facility is designed for patients to sleep.

 Clinical Presentation
  • Patients with the following conditions:
    • Requiring a safe environment at which to recover following an excessive intake of alcohol or other drugs.
    • Patients who can walk with limited or no assistance.
    • Aged 18 years or older.
 Exclusion Criteria

Patients meeting with the following criteria are NOT to be transported to Bridge House:

  • Patients who have any injury or acute illness.
  • Patients under the age of 18 years.
  • Patients who are aggressive or excessively agitated.
  • Patients suffering from an acute mental health event.
  • Patients who are unconscious or unable to walk with limited assistance.

These patients must be taken to the Emergency Department prescribed by the ANC.

 Risk Assessment
  • Staff at Bridge House, are not medically qualified and Paramedics need to ensure that the referral is appropriate.

Advanced Care
  • Determine if patient meets clinical criteria for referral to Bridge House
  • Contact Bridge House to discuss referral
  • If accepted by Bridge House, take patient to Bridge House 11-15 Wright Street, Highgate
  • If Bridge House does not accept patient, transport to hospital as per current clinical practice

  • Not applicable
 Additional Information
  • Staff at Bridge House have the right to refuse a patient.
  • If there are any clinical indications of acute illness or injury, patients are to be transported to hospital as per current practice.
