The uncomplicated wound pathway is designed for use within the metropolitan area only at the present time
- Uncomplicated wound care and Secondary Triage Desk consideration for referral to community services
- Minor wounds in the community in medically stable and appropriate patients
- Intended for adults aged 18 and over. However, children aged 13 and above may be accepted if they are able to be administered medications as an adult, not currently under the care of a paediatrician and have a responsible adult present during the visit.
Clinical criteria
- Unable or unsuitable to wait four hours to be reviewed
- STT unable to confirm timely referral
- Medically unstable requiring Emergency Department transportation
- Mentally unstable that would be unsafe to remain at home without care or supervision
- Under 18 years of age. However, children aged 13 and above may be accepted if they are able to be administered medications as an adult AND are not currently under the care of a paediatrician AND have a responsible adult present during the visit.
- Greater than 20 weeks pregnant
- Active or current alcohol abuse, IVDU or intoxication
- Residing in an unsafe environment (unsuitable for a solo referral)
- Head lacerations with associated loss of consciousness
Wound criteria
- Active, continually or uncontrolled bleeding
- Extensive or deep wounds requiring suturing or closure by medical professional
- Non superficial wounds displaying underlying tissue
- Suspicion of deep tissue damage
- Foreign body in wound unable to be removed by irrigation
- Suspected fractures
- Human or animal bites
- Puncture wounds with potential injury to underlying structures
- Chronic wounds showing signs of infection
- Applies to Metropolitan Ambulance/PTS personnel only
- As per Primary Care guidelines
- Engage with the STT team as soon as practicable to determine the patient pathway
- As per Advanced Care (AP) guidelines
