Indications
  • To prepare an I.V. giving set prior to administration of fluids.

  • Air embolus
  • Extravasation
  • Phlebitis
  • IV bags should only be ‘spiked’ once.
  • If a second bag is to be spiked, ensure IV giving set is filled with fluid and drip chamber at least half full. 
Procedure

  • Remove giving set from packaging.
  • Reposition flow regulator around 20cm below drip chamber.
  • Close the roller clamp by rolling into downward position.
  • Clip patient connection port into side of flow regulator.
  • Remove I.V. bag from packaging, ensuring medication is in date and no contaminants seen in bag.
  • Remove and discard the plastic protection from the I.V. bag.
  • Remove and discard the safety cap on the giving set spike.
  • While holding the bag inverted, gently insert spike into port of I.V. bag.
  • Hang or hold bag in upright position.
  • Squeeze and release drip chamber until at least half full.
  • Slowly open roller clamp to prime line, avoiding air bubble formation.
  • Ensure line is fully primed with fluid and connect to patient cannula for administration of fluids.
