Patient Factors & Considerations
  • Each device is a single-use injection
  • EpiPen® can be administered through a single layer of clothing if necessary (not pockets or seams)
Procedure
  • All relevant infection control methods should be utilised
  • Prepare the EpiPen® / EpiPen® Jr
  • Explain the procedure to the patient

  • Position the patient supine, or in the recovery position if unconscious.
  • Remove the EpiPen® from the carrier tube.
  • Form a fist around EpiPen® with orange tip pointing downwards.
  • Pull off the blue safety release[1].
  • Hold the leg firmly and place orange end against the outer mid-thigh[2].
  • Push down hard until a click is heard or felt and hold for 3 seconds[3].
  • Remove from the patients thigh.
  • Discard of the used EpiPen® safely.

Success
  • Continue treatment as per Anaphylaxis Clinical Practice Guideline.
Discontinue
  • If ineffective, ensure remaining treatment modalities are explored as per Anaphylaxis Clinical Practice Guideline.
  • If patient still unresponsive, consider other aetiologies of presentation.
