A condition in which worry, fear and anxiety are prominent and can result in episodes of intense panic.

Common features include:

  • Intense fear
  • Palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Feeling of choking or shortness of breath

Tips for management:

  • Provide clear direction with a slow, calm tone of voice and provide positive feedback
  • Have only one person approach and communicate
  • Deep, slow breathing techniques may help redirect patient
  • Engagement may be poor during panic episode
  • Limit distracting stimuli
