Diagnosed as a cluster of long-standing instability with relationships, identity, sense of self and the control of emotions and behaviours.

Common features include:

  • Instability in mood
  • Fear of abandonment
  • Feelings of isolation or emptiness
  • Impulsiveness

Tips for management:

  • Be aware of your own attitude as these patient disengage easily if they feel they are not being valued
  • Respond to the person not the person’s diagnosis or label
  • Be patient, as it is easy to get disheartened
  • Set clear boundaries about acceptable and unacceptable behaviour if required
